Connecting Arts and Humanities to the European open data commons: the OpenAIRE-DARIAH Research Community Gateway
The role of discovery platforms is becoming crucial as we produce an increasing amount of scholarly publications year by year. Not only they serve as a filtering interface (generous or not :-)) to mediate between ourselves, machines and the body of knowledge that is impossible to manually navigate (and stay on top of), but they also have a strong influence on knowledge representation in general. Our experiences with first-generation scholarly information management systems, such as Scopus, Web of Science or Google Scholar and their enormous impact on academic publishing and assessment clearly indicate how such services should be optimally designed.
- We need community-owned, open but sustainable infrastructures. Peter Kraker’s #DontLeaveItToGoogle campaign argues compellingly why mitigating academia’s dependence on big, for-profit commercial providers and gaining back control over scholarly infrastructure is an absolute priority when it comes to discovery practices.
- We need discovery services that are inclusive with all disciplines (anyone who have ever been struggling with the underrepresentation of humanities scholarship in Scopus and Web of Science sees priority in the inclusion of the long tail of social sciences and humanities), but also with all kinds of digital scholarly objects: research data (whatever this means in certain disciplinary contexts), software, documentation etc. that go beyond the traditional genre of a research paper. Having well-established information management systems in place that are optimized for research data and software is an absolute necessity for their proper recognition in academic tenure guidelines so that scholars can receive proper credit for them.
The OpenAIRE Research Graph and OpenAIRE Explore, a portal that is built on top of the graph, is probably the biggest such publicly owned, scholarly discovery service in Europe that is inclusive with a wide range of content types and is expected to become a central service within the EOSC. In this post, we take a look at how DARIAH helps connect Arts and Humanities research data and other content types to the OpenAIRE Research Graph to increase their visibility and reusability beyond geographical, language and disciplinary borders.
- The OpenAIRE-DARIAH Community Gateway – what’s in there for you?
Within the framework of the OpenAIRE Advance project, we built a dedicated Research Community Gateway to DARIAH to provide scholarly communities with a single entry point to DARIAH-affiliated research outputs.
It brings together:
- The content of DARIAH Zenodo communities
- DARIAH affiliated publications from the French HAL publications repository
- Publication records that entered the OpenAIRE research graph and are identified as DARIAH-affiliated as a result of content mining algorithms
- DARIAH-affiliated publications requested to be added to the dashboard (e.g. items from the DARIAH Zotero Bibliography, records that are suggested by members of the DARIAH network to be added)
- TEI encoded digital critical editions from the TextGrid Repository that had been produced in collaboration with DARIAH
- Data (images, audiovisual data, raw and structured textual data etc.) from the SSH repository NAKALA that are affiliated with DARIAH
As a result, content types that are important for the arts and humanities communities became visible in the DARIAH Gateway but also became part of the OpenAIRE Research Graph and the OpenAIRE Digital Humanities and Cultural heritage collection.
- Integrating national DARIAH services to the OpenAIRE Research Graph and connecting them with the European data landscape
One important aspect of our work was to select flagship DARIAH data services, the German TextGrid and the French NAKALA repositories, that are operating on national levels and make them harvestable by OpenAIRE. In practice, this meant developing metadata crosswalks between Dublin Core (TexGrid) and DC terms (NAKALA) metadata schemas and the DataCite standards.
Exploring possibilities for bringing together content (metadata) from domain-specific repositories operating on national levels was an especially worthwhile exercise considering the highly distributed build-up of DARIAH, where services are not offered through a centralised/federated architecture, but instead through in-kind contributions of individual partners (see Kálmán et al. 2019).
- Ways to engage with the gateway
The DARIAH gateway had been built for anyone who wishes to search for DARIAH-affiliated scholarship across numerous journals,publication databases, preprint and data archives, and project outputs of different kinds, but also for service providers and institutions who wish to connect their services with the dashboard to increase their visibility on the European horizon. The gateway also allows monitoring of the growth of DARIAH’s self-archiving and self-publishing practices from a single discovery hub.
